The federal government is launching its own "pharmaceutical index" of Viagra for Canadians. But the drug's maker, Pfizer, is also selling a "pharmaceutical index" of a generic version of the drug.

Pfizer is also fighting a patent-infringement lawsuit brought by the Canadian Patent Office that will accuse the drug's maker of patent infringement.
In the meantime, Canadian drugmaker Viatris has agreed to pay a $200 million civil fine in exchange for selling the drug in Canada for a period of more than a year.
Viatris is seeking $300 million in damages from the U. government for alleged infringement of a Canadian patent on Viagra.
"We are a very small company and there is a very small number of products that could be impacted by our patent and that could cause problems," said William J. Schumacher, the executive director of the Canadian Patent Office.
The Canadian patent office said the Canadian patent on Viagra will be lost by the end of the year, but the Canadian patent office has already made a final decision on the patent.
Pfizer says the patent on Viagra was still in its last year's formulary, so it is looking for an opportunity to market its own version of the drug.
